BUILDING HOPE, BUILDING HOME

The Raedan Institute Permanent Centre – £2 Million Capital Campaign

“And whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it.” (Qur’an 99:7)

A Vision Born from Necessity, Realized Through Unity

For nineteen years, Raedan Institute has served Leicester’s and Lancashire’s most vulnerable from rented premises at 2 Overton Road. From these modest spaces, we’ve distributed 140,000+ food packs, educated 1,000+ students, supported 500+ families through crises, counselled 250+ individuals, trained 300+ young footballers, facilitated 50+ family reunifications, and provided spiritual nourishment to hundreds through our Masjid. We’ve proven what’s possible with limited resources and unlimited commitment.

But we’ve reached our ceiling. Rented premises constrain our capacity while draining £60,000-£75,000 annually—resources that could serve hundreds more families. Small spaces limit services. Inadequate facilities compromise dignity. Dependence on landlords creates perpetual uncertainty. We turn away desperate families monthly because we lack capacity. Brilliant students wait months for spaces. Our food bank operates from cramped storage. Sports activities are limited by minimal facilities. We’re bursting at the seams while community needs multiply.

We have a choice: remain constrained by rental limitations or build a permanent home enabling transformational expansion.

This is not merely about bricks and mortar—it’s about building a legacy serving Leicester’s Muslims and wider community for generations. It’s about amplifying our impact tenfold. It’s about creating jobs, reducing homelessness and poverty, providing world-class education, and establishing a beacon of Islamic compassion and excellence.

We need £2 million to purchase land and build a purpose-designed Islamic community centre that will transform thousands of lives annually for decades to come.

The Transformational Vision: From 100 to 5,000+

Current Reality: Constrained by Rental Limitations

Today, from our rented premises, we serve approximately 5000 individuals annually across all services. While impactful, this represents a fraction of community need. Our limitations are stark:

Space Constraints:

  • 100 students crammed into limited classrooms
  • Food bank operates from inadequate storage (serving 40-50 families monthly—turning away many)
  • 300 children in sports programs (limited by tiny outdoor space and no proper facilities)
  • 50 Contact Centre families annually (could serve triple with adequate facilities)
  • 250 counselling clients (turning away dozens due to limited therapy rooms)
  • Masjid capacity: 100-150 worshippers (overcrowded many a times)

Financial Drain:

  • £60,000-£75,000 annual rent (£1.2 million over 20 years!)
  • High maintenance costs on aging, unsuitable building
  • Limited income generation (no proper hall hire facilities, no sports pitch hire)

Operational Limitations:

  • No proper car parking (accessibility issues for disabled, elderly, families)
  • No outdoor sports facilities (football played in tiny yard)
  • No purpose-designed food bank warehouse
  • No science labs or IT suites
  • No dedicated women’s spaces
  • No accessibility features (lifts, ramps, disabled facilities)
  • No eco-friendly features (soaring energy costs)

Community Impact:

  • Hundreds turned away annually due to capacity constraints
  • Services operating below potential effectiveness
  • Inability to expand despite desperate need
  • Perpetual financial insecurity (rent increases, potential eviction)

The Vision: Purpose-Built Centre on 2-3 Acres

Imagine a 2-3 acre site in Leicester with purpose-designed facilities enabling tenfold impact expansion:

  • Science laboratories enabling practical STEM education
  • IT suites with 30+ computers for digital skills training
  • Library and resource centre with thousands of books
  • Quiet study spaces for examination preparation
  • Dedicated spaces for different age groups (primary, secondary, A-level, adult learning)
  • Result: 500 students receiving world-class education annually—five times current capacity

Poverty Relief Transformation (500 → 12,000+ families annually):

  • Result: Eliminating food insecurity for thousands of Leicester families

  • High-efficiency heating/cooling systems
  • LED lighting throughout
  • Insulation exceeding building regulations
  • EV charging stations
  • Result: £100k+ annual operational cost savings; environmental stewardship

Income Generation Enabling Sustainability:

  • Sports pitch hire: 6 pitches × £30-40/hour = £200k annual income potential
  • Community hall hire: Weddings, events, conferences = £100k annually
  • Increased donations/collections (more footfall, bigger congregation) = £100k annually
  • Expanded services attracting grant funding = £300k-500k annually
  • Result: £700k-900k annual income (vs. current ~£200k), enabling massive service expansion without proportional fundraising dependency

Why Now? The Urgency of This Opportunity

Property Market Realities

Leicester land prices are rising. The difference between purchasing in 2025 vs. 2030 could be £200k-300k. Every year we delay costs us financially and in lost opportunity to serve thousands.

Community Need is Critical and Growing

Post-pandemic poverty, inflation, cost-of-living crisis—Leicester families face unprecedented hardship. Food bank demand hasn’t decreased; it’s increased. Mental health crises are epidemic. Educational inequality widens. The need is NOW, not someday.

Momentum Must Be Seized

Raedan Institute has proven its effectiveness over 19 years. We have community trust, operational expertise, regulatory compliance, and track record. We have never been better positioned for this transformational leap. Capital campaigns require momentum—we must strike while community confidence is high.

Generational Opportunity

How often does a community have opportunity to create an institution serving thousands for generations? This is once-in-a-generation opportunity. Our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will benefit. Will we seize it or let it pass?

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a continuing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Sahih Muslim 1631)

This permanent centre embodies all three: continuing charity serving thousands perpetually, beneficial knowledge through education, and righteous children raised through Islamic education and moral guidance.

The Islamic Imperative: Building for Allah’s Pleasure

The Unparalleled Reward

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 450)

While this hadith specifically mentions mosques, classical scholars extend the principle to Islamic institutions serving the community. Our centre includes a beautiful Masjid and comprehensive facilities enabling worship, education, and service—multiplying rewards exponentially.

Investment in Sadaqah Jariyah

Unlike one-time charity that ends when consumed, this permanent centre creates perpetual, cascading rewards:

Every prayer performed in our Masjid for the next 50, 100, 200 years—reward for you.

Every student educated who becomes a doctor, teacher, engineer, scholar—reward for you.

Every family fed who escapes poverty and later feeds others—reward for you.

Every child who learns Qur’an and teaches their children—reward for you.

Every marriage saved through counselling, every homeless family kept housed, every depressed individual who finds hope—reward for you.

Imagine: One donation today generating rewards every single day, week, month, year for decades or centuries. When you pass from this world, these rewards continue accumulating in your scale of good deeds eternally. This is the promise of Sadaqah Jariyah.

Facilitating Good on Massive Scale

Allah ﷻ says: “The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies His reward for whom He wills.” (Qur’an 2:261)

When you build this centre, you don’t just earn reward for your donation—you earn reward for every good deed the centre enables:

  • Every act of worship
  • Every moment of learning
  • Every life transformed
  • Every family strengthened
  • Every person served

You become partner in 10,000+ people’s good deeds annually—millions of good deeds over the centre’s lifetime. The multiplication is beyond calculation, known only to Allah.

Leaving Legacy That Outlives You

Most things we do in life end when we die. Careers end. Wealth passes to heirs. Even our names fade from memory within generations.

But Sadaqah Jariyah transcends death. The centre you help build continues benefiting people 50, 100, 200 years after you’re gone. Your name may be forgotten on earth, but in the heavens, rewards accumulate in your scale perpetually.

The Prophet ﷺ warned: “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death.” (al-Hakim)

Your wealth is available now. Your capacity to give exists today. Tomorrow is uncertain. This is your opportunity to invest in eternity while transforming lives in the present.

  • Percentage of estate or specific amount
  • Named endowment in perpetuity
  • Family involvement in perpetuating legacy

Islamic guidance: Up to one-third of estate for charitable bequests (after debts and before inheritance distribution)

Zakah, Sadaqah, and Lillah: How Each Type Can Contribute

Lillah Donations (General Charity for Allah’s Sake)

The main £2 million capital campaign accepts Lillah/Sadaqah because purchasing land and constructing buildings constitutes infrastructure rather than direct assistance to Zakah-eligible categories.

Classical scholars including Imam al-Shafi’i distinguished Zakah (restricted to eight Quranic categories) from Lillah (permissible for any good cause including building Islamic institutions).

All donations to general capital campaign = Lillah/Sadaqah

Reward: Enormous, perpetual Sadaqah Jariyah as described above.

Zakah Structured Giving Opportunities

While the building itself is Lillah, we’ve created sub-campaigns enabling Zakah participation:

“Feed the Poor” Food Bank Warehouse: £100,000 (Zakah Eligible)

This designated fund builds and equips the food bank warehouse serving 12,000+ poor families annually. Recipients are Fuqara and Masakin (poor and needy)—primary Zakah categories.

Zakah ruling: Food assistance to the hungry poor is among the most meritorious Zakah uses, unanimously confirmed by scholars.

“Educate the Poor” Scholarship Endowment: £250,000 (Zakah Eligible)

Creates endowment funding 50+ poor students annually in perpetuity. Educational support for poor students enabling poverty escape is Zakah-eligible (Hanafi, contemporary scholars).

“Support the Needy” Emergency Family Centre: £50,000 (Zakah Eligible)

Builds dedicated emergency support centre serving families in crisis—rent arrears, utility disconnection, homelessness prevention. Direct assistance to poor and needy.

“Refuge for Families” Contact Centre: £75,000 (Zakah Eligible)

Expands Contact Centre serving broken families, many experiencing poverty following separation. Supports children’s welfare—priority in Islamic jurisprudence.

Total Zakah Opportunities: £475,000 within £2M campaign

Zakah payers can contribute to these designated sub-campaigns, fulfilling religious obligation while participating in this transformational project.

Sadaqah (Voluntary Charity)

All donations = Sadaqah (Lillah is subset of Sadaqah)

Sadaqah has no restrictions—any part of the campaign accepts Sadaqah, earning enormous rewards.

Summary: How to Designate Your Donation

For Masjid/general building/land/infrastructure: Designate “Lillah” or “Sadaqah”

For food bank warehouse: Can designate “Zakah” (if you owe Zakah)

For poor student education fund: Can designate “Zakah”

For emergency family support: Can designate “Zakah”

For Contact Centre: Can designate “Zakah”

Unsure? Designate “Sadaqah” (accepted for everything, earns full reward)

The Choice Before Us: Transform or Stagnate

We stand at a crossroads. Two futures stretch before us:

Future One: Remaining Renters

  • Continue paying £60k-75k annually (£3M+ over 50 years) with nothing to show
  • Serve 1,000-1,500 annually while turning away thousands
  • Perpetual limitations on services, capacity, impact
  • Aging facilities deteriorating
  • Potential eviction or unsustainable rent increases
  • Missed opportunity to create transformational legacy
  • Regret as we watch other communities build while we stagnate

Future Two: Building Our Permanent Home

  • Own 2-3 acre centre serving 5,000+ annually
  • Eliminate rent, saving millions over decades
  • Generate £700k-900k annual income through facility hire
  • Create 20-30 jobs for community members
  • Lift hundreds of families from poverty through comprehensive support
  • Provide world-class education enabling social mobility
  • Establish thriving Islamic community centre serving Leicester for generations
  • Leave legacy our children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren will cherish
  • Accumulate perpetual rewards as Sadaqah Jariyah benefiting thousands forever

Which future becomes reality depends on choices we make today.

Will you help us build?

Will you invest in Sadaqah Jariyah that never ends?

Will you answer Allah’s call: “Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?” (Qur’an 2:245)

The opportunity is before us. The need is urgent. The rewards are eternal.

Donate today. Build forever. Transform thousands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why £2 million? Isn’t that too ambitious?

A: Leicester property costs are high, and quality construction isn’t cheap. £1M for 2-3 acres of land is market rate. £750k for 30,000+ sq ft purpose-built facility is reasonable (£25/sq ft). We’ve budgeted realistically with contingency. Yes, it’s ambitious—but so is our vision to serve 5,000+ annually for generations.

Q: What if you don’t raise the full £2 million?

A: Our phased approach mitigates this risk. We purchase land first (£1M) securing the asset and demonstrating momentum. Then we raise building costs. If we only raise £1.5M, we build smaller initially and expand later. But we’re confident our community will rise to this challenge.

Q: Why not buy smaller and save money?

A: Penny-wise, pound-foolish. Building smaller means continuing to turn away people we could serve. Our projections are based on demonstrated need—we already turn people away due to capacity constraints. Building for growth is prudent stewardship.

Q: How will you manage such a large facility?

A: We have 19 years of operational experience, qualified staff, volunteer networks, and partnerships. The income generation (£400k-500k annually) funds operational costs including additional staff. We’ll grow capacity gradually, not overnight.

Q: What about planning permission and regulations?

A: We’ll conduct thorough due diligence before purchasing land, ensuring planning permission is feasible. We have experience navigating regulatory requirements and will engage professionals (architects, planners, solicitors) throughout.

Q: Can I specify exactly where my donation goes?

A: Yes! Designate “Food Bank Warehouse” (Zakah eligible), “Education Wing” (Lillah), “Masjid” (Lillah), “General Capital Campaign” (Lillah/Sadaqah), etc. We’ll honour your designation.

Q: Will my name definitely appear if I donate for naming opportunity?

A: Yes, if you wish. Many donors prefer anonymity (equally rewarded by Allah). We respect both preferences.

Q: Can I pay my donation over multiple years?

A: Absolutely! We encourage pledges payable over 2-5 years, enabling larger commitments through manageable instalments.

Q: What happens if I die before completing my pledge?

A: Islamic inheritance law takes precedence. Outstanding pledges don’t bind estates unless specified in Wasiyyah (will). However, many donors formalise pledges in wills ensuring completion and perpetuating legacy.

Q: How will you ensure my Zakah is used properly?

A: We maintain separate accounts for Zakah funds, ensuring they’re spent only on Zakah-eligible purposes (food bank, poor student education, emergency family support). We provide detailed reporting and welcome scrutiny.

Q: Can non-Muslims donate?

A: Absolutely! While framed in Islamic terms for our primary Muslim audience, this community centre serves all Leicester residents regardless of faith. Non-Muslim donations are welcome and equally appreciated.

Q: When will construction start?

A: Once we raise £1M (Years 1-2), we’ll purchase land. Construction begins when we raise remaining £1M (Years 3-4), with completion Year 5. Total timeline: 5 years from campaign launch to opening.

A Final Word: Your Place in History

Nineteen years ago, a small group of committed individuals founded Raedan Institute with a vision: serve Leicester’s most vulnerable with compassion, dignity, and Islamic values. From modest beginnings, we’ve grown to serve thousands, earning community trust and demonstrating sustainable impact.

But we’ve outgrown our rented premises. We’ve proven the model—now we need to scale it. This £2 million capital campaign represents the most significant undertaking in our history. It’s ambitious, even audacious. But it’s also necessary, achievable, and transformational.

History will record who stepped forward when their community needed them most.

Years from now, when thousands gather weekly at the Raedan Institute Islamic Community Centre—when children learn in bright classrooms, when families receive food with dignity, when athletes train on professional pitches, when worshippers pray in beautiful Masjid, when broken families reunite, when homeless families are kept housed, when the depressed find hope—people will ask: “Who built this?”

The answer will be: You did.

Your donation today—whether £10 or £1 million—makes you builder of this legacy. Your name may or may not appear on plaques, but in the heavens, it’s inscribed among those who answered when called.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 450)

We’re not just building a mosque—we’re building a comprehensive Islamic centre serving thousands for generations. If Allah builds a house in Paradise for building a mosque, what will He build for building this?

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Building Hope, Building Home: The £2 Million Transformation

The Vision in Brief

For 19 years, Raedan Institute has served Leicester’s most vulnerable from rented premises, proving our model works. We’ve distributed 140,000+ food packs, educated 1,000+ students, supported 500+ families through crises, and provided comprehensive community services. But we’ve reached our ceiling—constrained by rental limitations while paying £60,000-£75,000 annually with nothing to show.

We need £2 million to purchase land and build a permanent Islamic community centre that will transform our impact tenfold.

The Transformation: From Renting to Owning

Current Reality (Rented Premises):

  • 100 students (waiting lists for more)
  • 500 families receiving food support annually
  • 300 children in sports programs
  • 5,000-6,000 total individuals served annually
  • £60k-75k annual rent drain
  • Cramped facilities compromising dignity and effectiveness

Future Vision (Purpose-Built Centre on 2-3 Acres):

  • 500 students in modern classrooms, labs, IT suites
  • 12,000+ families receiving food support annually (1,000/month)
  • 1,000+ children in sports programs with 6 football pitches and indoor sports hall
  • 10,000+ individuals served annually across all programs
  • £0 rent + £100k annual savings from eco-friendly operations
  • £500k-600k annual income generation (facility hire, increased donations, grants)
  • 20-30 jobs created
  • Dignified, purpose-designed facilities reflecting community’s worth

The Investment: £2 Million Over 5 Years

Breakdown:

  • £1,000,000 – Land acquisition (2-3 acres, Leicester)
  • £750,000 – Building construction (30,000+ sq. ft)
  • £250,000 – Fit-out, equipment, landscaping, contingency

Phased Approach:

  • Years 1-2: Raise £1M, purchase land (securing asset)
  • Years 3-4: Raise remaining £1M, construct building
  • Year 5: Complete fit-out and open

The Returns: Financial and Social

Financial:

  • £100k+ annual operational savings (rent eliminated, energy efficiency)
  • £2M total savings over 20 years (investment recovered)
  • £700k-900k annual income generation (vs. current ~£200k)
  • Sustainable, independent operations

Social (Annual Impact After Completion):

  • 5,000+ individuals served directly
  • 12,000+ families receiving food assistance
  • 500 students receiving transformational education
  • 1,000+ children in sports and recreation
  • 1,000+ individuals receiving mental health support
  • 500+ worshippers in Masjid daily
  • 20-30 jobs created reducing unemployment
  • Hundreds of families lifted from poverty
  • Homelessness prevented through emergency support

Over 50 years: 250,000+ lives directly transformed

The Islamic Imperative

“Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 450)

This permanent centre creates Sadaqah Jariyah—ongoing charity generating rewards perpetually as thousands benefit for generations. Every prayer, every lesson, every life transformed generates reward for those who built it.

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.” (Qur’an 2:261)

Raedan Institute – Building Hope, Building Home

MAJOR DONOR PACKAGE

An Invitation to Transformational Legacy

Dear Prospective Partner in Transformation,

On behalf of Raedan Institute’s Board of Trustees, staff, and the thousands we serve, I invite you to consider a once-in-a-generation opportunity: building a permanent Islamic community centre that will transform Leicester for decades to come.

This is not a routine appeal for operating costs or modest program expansion. This is an invitation to create something extraordinary—a £2 million capital investment generating returns beyond calculation, serving 5,000+ individuals annually, creating 20-30 jobs, and establishing a legacy that will outlive us all by centuries.

Your leadership gift of £50,000+ places you among the visionary benefactors whose names will be honoured as founders of this transformational institution.

Why This Matters: The Case for Transformational Investment

Proven Track Record, Exponential Potential

Raedan Institute isn’t a startup with uncertain prospects—we’re a 19-year-old registered charity (Numbers: 1113547/1209333) with demonstrated impact and community trust. We’ve served thousands, maintained financial stability through crises including COVID-19, achieved regulatory compliance (Charity Commission, NACCC accreditation, JCQ examination centre), and built partnerships across Leicester.

We’ve proven we can serve effectively—now we need facilities matching our potential.

Rental Constraints Limiting Impact

Current rented premises cost £60,000-£75,000 annually (£3 million over 50 years!) while constraining capacity:

  • 100 students (turning away dozens monthly)
  • 500 families receiving food support (demand far exceeds capacity)
  • 300 children in sports programs (limited by inadequate facilities)
  • Cramped counselling rooms compromising client dignity
  • Overcrowded Masjid during Jumu’ah and Ramadan
  • No proper car parking (accessibility issues)
  • No science labs, IT suites, or purpose-designed spaces

We’re bursting at the seams while community needs multiply.

Ownership Transforms Everything

A purpose-built centre on 2-3 acres enables:

  • 5x student capacity: 100 → 500 students annually
  • 24x food bank capacity: 500 → 12,000+ families annually
  • 3x sports capacity: 300 → 1,000+ participants
  • Comprehensive facilities: 6 football pitches, indoor sports hall, 20+ classrooms, science labs, IT suites, professional counselling wing, spacious Masjid, community hall for 300+, 100-space car park
  • Financial transformation: £0 rent + £100k annual savings + £700k-900k income generation = financial sustainability
  • Job creation: 20-30 quality jobs for community members
  • Social impact: Poverty alleviation, homelessness prevention, educational excellence, mental health support, community cohesion

Over 50 years: 250,000+ lives directly transformed. An entire city changed.

Beyond Naming: The True ROI

While naming recognition is meaningful, the true return on your investment transcends plaques and ceremonies:

Spiritual ROI: Sadaqah Jariyah

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: a continuing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.” (Sahih Muslim 1631)

Your major gift creates all three:

  • Continuing charity: Centre serving thousands perpetually
  • Beneficial knowledge: Education enabling lifelong learning and teaching
  • Righteous children: Muslim youth raised with strong Islamic values

After you pass from this world, rewards continue accumulating in your scale of good deeds:

  • Every prayer performed
  • Every Qur’anic verse learned
  • Every family fed
  • Every life transformed
  • Every student who becomes doctor, teacher, engineer, scholar
  • Every person who finds hope in despair

Rewards accumulating daily for 50, 100, 200 years. Investment in eternity.

Social ROI: Lives Transformed

Your gift creates measurable, transformational social impact:

  • Education: 500 students annually × 50 years = 25,000 students educated, many lifted from poverty
  • Food security: 12,000 families annually × 50 years = 600,000 food distributions preventing hunger
  • Sports: 1,000 participants annually × 50 years = 50,000 youth developed physically, mentally, socially
  • Mental health: 1,000 individuals annually × 50 years = 50,000 counselling interventions
  • Employment: 20-30 jobs × 50 years = 1,000-1,500 years of employment provided
  • Community cohesion: Thousands attending Masjid, events, programs—strengthening social fabric

Over 50 years: 250,000+ individuals directly impacted. Incalculable ripple effects.

Financial ROI: Sustainability

Your capital investment creates perpetual financial sustainability:

  • Eliminated rent: £60k-75k annually = £3M+ over 50 years saved
  • Operational savings: £100k annually = £5M over 50 years
  • Income generation: £700k-900k annually = £35M-45M over 50 years

Your £100k gift enables £5M+ in future charitable work. 50:1 return.

Legacy ROI: Immortality

Most things we achieve in life are forgotten within generations. Careers end. Wealth dissipates. Even names fade from memory.

But institutions endure. The centre you help build may serve Leicester for 100, 200, even 500 years. Long after you’re gone, long after your grandchildren’s grandchildren are gone, this centre will stand—serving thousands, embodying your values, perpetuating your legacy.

Ozymandias built monuments to himself—they’re dust. But those who built for Allah left institutions that endured centuries, serving millions, accumulating eternal rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I pay my naming gift over multiple years?

A: Absolutely! We encourage pledges over 2-5 years, enabling larger commitments through manageable payments. Naming recognition begins when pledge is formalized, not when fully paid.

Q: What if naming opportunity I want is already claimed?

A: We’ll suggest comparable alternatives or discuss custom naming opportunities. Many spaces can accommodate multiple donors at different levels.

Q: Can I name something for someone who’s passed away?

A: Yes! Memorial naming gifts are beautiful ways to perpetuate loved ones’ legacies. Ongoing Sadaqah Jariyah benefits them eternally.

Q: How long does naming recognition last?

A: Perpetually. As long as the centre stands (potentially centuries), your naming endures. It’s permanent, not temporary.

Q: Can I remain anonymous?

A: Absolutely. Anonymous gifts receive equal—some scholars say superior—spiritual reward. We respect all preferences.

Q: What happens if facility is renovated or expanded in future?

A: Your naming is protected. If your named space is modified, naming transfers to renovated/replacement space, or we work with your family to identify appropriate alternative recognition.

Q: Can international donors participate?

A: Yes! We accept international donations and work with donors globally to facilitate gifts and recognition.

Q: Is there Gift Aid for naming gifts?

A: Yes! UK taxpayers add 25% at no cost through Gift Aid. £100,000 becomes £125,000 automatically.

Q: Can I split a naming opportunity with others?

A: Yes! Families, friend groups, or community members can collectively fund naming opportunities and share recognition.

ZAKAH STRUCTURING GUIDE

How Zakah Payers Can Participate in the £2 Million Capital Campaign

“Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [Zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveller—an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” (Qur’an 9:60)

Introduction: Zakah and Capital Campaigns

Many Muslims wish to contribute to the £2 million capital campaign using Zakah funds. This guide clarifies what is and isn’t Zakah-eligible within our campaign, enabling Zakah payers to participate while maintaining scholarly compliance.

Key Principle: Infrastructure vs. Direct Assistance

General Capital Campaign (Land Purchase, Building Construction) = Lillah/Sadaqah Only (NOT Zakah)

Classical scholars distinguish between:

  • Zakah: Restricted to eight Quranic categories, primarily direct assistance to poor and needy
  • Lillah/Sadaqah: Permissible for broader charitable purposes including infrastructure

Purchasing land and constructing buildings constitutes infrastructure enabling service delivery rather than direct assistance to Zakah-eligible categories. Therefore, the general £2 million capital campaign accepts Lillah and Sadaqah but NOT Zakah.

HOWEVER: We’ve structured Zakah-eligible sub-campaigns within the overall project, enabling Zakah participation.

ZAKAH-ELIGIBLE SUB-CAMPAIGNS

Total Zakah Opportunities: £475,000 within £2M Campaign

SUB-CAMPAIGN 1: “Feed the Poor” Food Bank Warehouse

Amount: £100,000 | ZAKAH ELIGIBLE

What This Funds:

  • Professional food bank warehouse with storage, refrigeration, distribution systems
  • Capacity to serve 1,000+ families monthly (12,000+ annually)
  • Dignified, efficient food assistance infrastructure

Why Zakah-Eligible: Direct service to Fuqara and masakin (poor and needy)—primary Zakah categories. Recipients are families experiencing food insecurity and poverty.

Scholarly Basis:

  • Qur’an 9:60: “Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy…”
  • Unanimous scholarly consensus: Feeding hungry poor is among most meritorious Zakah uses
  • Contemporary scholars: Infrastructure directly serving Zakah categories (with no alternative purpose) can be funded by Zakah when it enables Zakah-compliant distribution

How It Works: Your Zakah builds warehouse serving exclusively poor families (no commercial use, no general community use). Families accessing food bank must meet poverty criteria. This makes the facility itself Zakah-eligible as it serves only Zakah recipients.

Impact:

  • 12,000+ poor families annually receiving food assistance
  • Eliminating hunger and food insecurity for thousands
  • Your Zakah directly fulfilling its purpose: assisting the poor and needy

How to Donate:

  • Specify: “Project 3 – Food Bank Warehouse – ZAKAH”
  • Your Zakah will be separately accounted and restricted exclusively to this facility

SUB-CAMPAIGN 2: “Educate the Poor” Scholarship Endowment

Amount: £250,000 | ZAKAH ELIGIBLE

What This Funds:

  • Permanent endowment funding education for poor students
  • £250,000 endowment generates approximately £10,000-£15,000 annually in perpetuity
  • Funds 3-5 full scholarships annually for students from impoverished families

Why Zakah-Eligible: Recipients are poor students (Fuqara and masakin) receiving educational support enabling poverty escape—perfectly aligned with Zakah objectives.

Scholarly Basis:

  • Hanafi school: Explicitly permits Zakah for poor students’ educational expenses (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar)
  • Contemporary scholars: Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi affirms Zakah eligibility for educational support to poor students (al-Qaradawi, Fiqh al-Zakah)
  • Rationale: Education enables poverty alleviation, fulfilling Zakah’s fundamental purpose of lifting people from need

How It Works: Endowment principal (£250,000) invested conservatively. Annual returns (£10k-£15k) fund full scholarships for students from families meeting poverty criteria (income below Zakah threshold). Students receive free education, examination costs, resources, support—everything needed to succeed academically and escape poverty.

Impact:

  • 3-5 poor students annually × 50 years = 150-250 students lifted from poverty through education
  • Perpetual Sadaqah Jariyah as educated students contribute to society
  • Your Zakah enabling lifelong transformation

How to Donate:

  • Specify: “Project 3 – Scholarship Endowment – ZAKAH”
  • Separately accounted, serves only poor students in perpetuity

SUB-CAMPAIGN 3: “Support the Needy” Emergency Family Support Centre

Amount: £50,000 | ZAKAH ELIGIBLE

What This Funds:

  • Dedicated emergency support centre with office, counselling space, storage for emergency supplies
  • Base for staff coordinating crisis interventions (rent arrears, utility disconnections, emergency needs)
  • Facilities enabling rapid response to families in acute poverty crises

Why Zakah-Eligible: Serves exclusively families in crisis experiencing acute poverty—Fuqara and masakin. Emergency assistance (preventing eviction, restoring utilities, crisis relief) directly fulfils Zakah purposes.

Scholarly Basis:

  • Qur’an 9:60: Zakah for “the poor and needy”—families in crisis are definitionally needy
  • Classical scholars: Emergency assistance preventing further poverty or harm is preferred Zakah use
  • Preventing debt category: Emergency assistance often prevents families falling into “those in debt” (al-Gharimeen), another Zakah category

How It Works: Facility serves as hub for emergency interventions. Staff assess families, verify poverty, provide assistance (rent payments, utility bills, groceries, clothing, etc.). All recipients meet Zakah eligibility criteria. Facility has no alternative use—exclusively for serving poor in crisis.

Impact:

  • 200+ families annually prevented from eviction, utility disconnection, or crisis deterioration
  • Homelessness prevented
  • Family stability maintained
  • Your Zakah preventing catastrophic harm to vulnerable families

How to Donate:

  • Specify: “Project 3 – Emergency Support Centre – ZAKAH”
  • Separately accounted, serves only poor families in crisis

SUB-CAMPAIGN 4: “Refuge for Families” Contact Centre Expansion

Amount: £75,000 | ZAKAH ELIGIBLE

What This Funds:

  • Expanded Contact Centre facilities enabling supervised family contact after separation/divorce
  • Serves broken families, many experiencing poverty following family breakdown
  • Protects children’s welfare (vital interest in Islamic jurisprudence)

Why Zakah-Eligible: Many Contact Centre families experience poverty—single parents (typically mothers) struggle financially while non-resident parents face accommodation and financial pressures. Children from these families are Fuqara and masakin.

Scholarly Basis:

  • Direct poverty assistance: Many recipients meet income criteria for Zakah
  • Child welfare: Facilitating family contact protects children’s psychological welfare—priority in Islamic law (maslahah)
  • Contemporary scholars: Zakah permissible for services protecting children’s welfare when families lack financial capacity

How It Works: Contact Centre assesses families, verifying economic circumstances. Families unable to afford commercial Contact Centre fees (typically £80-£150 per session) receive subsidized or free access funded by Zakah. Facility expansion enables serving more low-income families.

Impact:

  • 100+ low-income families annually accessing supervised contact
  • Children maintaining vital parental relationships
  • Family breakdown mitigated
  • Your Zakah protecting vulnerable children and struggling families

How to Donate:

  • Specify: “Project 3 – Contact Centre – ZAKAH”
  • Separately accounted, serves primarily low-income families

NON-ZAKAH PORTIONS OF CAMPAIGN

These Accept Lillah/Sadaqah Only (NOT Zakah)

Land Purchase: £1,000,000

Lillah/Sadaqah Only

Purchasing land is infrastructure investment benefiting community broadly, not direct assistance to Zakah categories. While facility will serve poor people, land itself is general infrastructure.

Appropriate for: Lillah, Sadaqah, general charitable giving

General Building Construction: £750,000

Lillah/Sadaqah Only

Constructing Masjid, classrooms (serving all income levels), community halls, administrative offices, etc. constitutes general infrastructure.

Exception: The four Zakah-designated sub-campaigns above are carved out as Zakah-eligible portions.

Appropriate for: Lillah, Sadaqah, general charitable giving

Masjid/Prayer Facilities: £150,000

Lillah/Sadaqah Only

Masjid serves entire community regardless of income. Classical scholars unanimously agree building mosques is from Lillah/Sadaqah, not Zakah.

Enormous reward: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise” (Sahih al-Bukhari 450)

Appropriate for: Lillah, Sadaqah

Sports Facilities: £250,000

Lillah/Sadaqah Only

Sports programs serve children from all backgrounds, not exclusively poor. General community benefit rather than Zakah-specific.

Exception: Individual poor child sponsorships ARE Zakah-eligible (see below)

Appropriate for: Lillah, Sadaqah

Administrative & Support Facilities: £100,000

Lillah/Sadaqah Only

Offices, meeting rooms, general infrastructure enabling organizational operations.

Appropriate for: Lillah, Sadaqah

ALTERNATIVE ZAKAH PARTICIPATION: ONGOING PROGRAMS

If Zakah-eligible sub-campaigns are fully funded, Zakah payers can contribute to ongoing programs:

Student Sponsorships

  • £3,000 per poor student annually
  • Fully Zakah-eligible (direct assistance to poor students)
  • Immediate impact while centre is being built

Food Bank Operations

  • £50 per family monthly
  • Fully Zakah-eligible (feeding hungry poor)
  • Ongoing need continuing during and after construction

Emergency Family Support

  • £100-£500 per crisis intervention
  • Fully Zakah-eligible (assisting poor families in crisis)
  • Immediate assistance available now

Counselling for Poor Clients

  • £50 per session
  • Zakah-eligible when serving poor clients
  • Mental health support for those who cannot afford private counselling

See Projects 3, 4, 8, and 10 in our donation projects for details.

HOW TO DESIGNATE YOUR ZAKAH

Step 1: Calculate Your Zakah

Zakah is 2.5% of wealth (cash, savings, investments, gold, silver, business assets) held for one lunar year above nisab threshold.

Current nisab: Approximately £3,500 (based on silver price—check current rates)

Example: £100,000 in qualifying wealth × 2.5% = £2,500 Zakah due

Step 2: Choose Zakah-Eligible Sub-Campaign

Select from:

  • Food Bank Warehouse (£100,000 total—can contribute any amount toward this)
  • Scholarship Endowment (£250,000 total—can contribute any amount toward this)
  • Emergency Support Centre (£50,000 total—can contribute any amount toward this)
  • Contact Centre Expansion (£75,000 total—can contribute any amount toward this)

Or choose ongoing programs (student sponsorships, food bank operations, etc.)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can I pay all my Zakah to the capital campaign?

A: Only to Zakah-eligible sub-campaigns (Food Bank, Scholarship, Emergency Support, Contact Centre). Maximum Zakah eligible portion is £475,000 total. Once these are fully funded, Zakah must go to other Zakah-eligible causes (ongoing programs, other charities serving poor).

Q: Is building a mosque Zakah-eligible?

A: No. Classical scholars unanimously state mosques are built from Lillah, not Zakah. However, the reward is immense: “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”

Q: Why can’t all £2 million be Zakah if it serves the community?

A: Zakah has strict restrictions to eight Quranic categories. General infrastructure benefits all, not specifically Zakah categories. We’ve maximized Zakah eligibility (£475k) by designating facilities serving exclusively poor populations.

Q: What if Zakah sub-campaigns are fully funded?

A: We’ll update website showing which sub-campaigns are fully funded. Your Zakah can go to ongoing programs (food bank operations, student sponsorships, emergency support) or other Zakah-eligible charities.

Q: Can I pay Zakah over multiple years toward capital campaign?

A: No. Zakah is annual obligation on wealth currently owned. You cannot pledge future Zakah (you don’t know your wealth status in future years). However, you can make multi-year Lillah/Sadaqah pledge and separate annual Zakah to Zakah-eligible portions.

Q: How do I know my Zakah was used properly?

A: Annual Zakah report + receipt specifying Zakah designation + separate accounting + transparent reporting + charitable oversight. We’re fully accountable to you, regulators, and ultimately Allah.

Q: Can I split donation between Zakah and Lillah?

A: Absolutely! Example: £5,000 total = £2,500 Zakah to Food Bank Warehouse + £2,500 Lillah to general construction. Just specify clearly.

Q: What if I’m unsure whether my Zakah designation is valid?

A: Contact us or consult your local scholar. We’re happy to discuss and obtain fatwas for uncertain situations. Better to verify than risk invalid Zakah payment.

MAXIMIZING YOUR IMPACT: ZAKAH + SADAQAH

The Power of Combining

Most generous donors can combine Zakah and Sadaqah:

Example 1: £10,000 Total Giving Capacity

  • £2,500 Zakah → Food Bank Warehouse (Zakah obligation fulfilled)
  • £7,500 Sadaqah → General Capital Campaign, Masjid, Sports Complex, etc.
  • Result: Zakah obligation fulfilled + massive Sadaqah Jariyah + £12,500 total (with Gift Aid)

Example 2: £100,000 Total Giving Capacity

  • £25,000 Zakah → Scholarship Endowment (Zakah obligation fulfilled)
  • £75,000 Sadaqah → Name major facility (Education Wing, Community Centre, etc.)
  • Result: Zakah fulfilled + naming recognition + £125,000 total (with Gift Aid)

Example 3: £1,000 Total Giving Capacity

  • £250 Zakah → Emergency Support Centre
  • £750 Sadaqah → General campaign
  • Result: Zakah fulfilled + full participation in transformational legacy + £1,250 (with Gift Aid)

Why Both Matter

Zakah: Obligatory, purifies wealth, fulfils religious duty, must go to eligible categories

Sadaqah: Voluntary, enormous reward, flexibility, can fund broader projects including infrastructure

Combining both:

  • Fulfils obligation (Zakah)
  • Maximizes voluntary reward (Sadaqah)
  • Enables full participation in £2M campaign
  • Creates comprehensive Sadaqah Jariyah

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains.” (Qur’an 2:261)

CONCLUSION: ZAKAH PAYERS CAN PARTICIPATE!

While the main £2 million capital campaign is Lillah/Sadaqah, we’ve created £475,000 in Zakah-eligible opportunities enabling Zakah payers to participate while maintaining full scholarly compliance.

Your Zakah can:

  • Build Food Bank Warehouse serving 12,000+ poor families annually
  • Create Scholarship Endowment educating poor students perpetually
  • Establish Emergency Support Centre preventing homelessness and crisis
  • Expand Contact Centre protecting vulnerable children and struggling families

All while fulfilling your Zakah obligation and creating perpetual Sadaqah Jariyah.

For questions about Zakah eligibility:

  • Phone: 07725974831
  • Consult your local scholar
  • We’re happy to obtain fatwas for specific situations

May Allah accept your Zakah, multiply your rewards, and make you among those who hasten to good deeds.
